Custom Domains Are Free on MyKayd: Why We Built It This Way
Why MyKayd made custom domains free, how to connect your own domain, and what happens behind the scenes when your form goes live.
A form is often one of the first places a customer, applicant, patient, employee, or partner interacts with a business. The questions matter, but so does the link you send them.
That is why MyKayd now supports custom domains. If you own a domain, you can publish your forms from a branded address such as forms.yourcompany.com instead of asking people to leave your brand behind when they open a form.
We also made custom domains available on the Free plan. No paid upgrade is required.
Why we added it
Your form should feel like part of your business
Most form builders give you a hosted link. That is useful, but for important forms the URL becomes part of the experience. A job application, customer intake form, event registration page, support request, or lead form can feel more trustworthy when it lives on the same domain people already recognize.
We added custom domains for three practical reasons:
- Brand continuity. People can move from your website to your form without feeling like they have been sent to an unrelated service.
- Cleaner sharing. A link such as forms.acme.com/customer-feedback is easier to recognize in emails, QR codes, job listings, and campaigns.
- More ownership. The form is powered by MyKayd, but the public address can belong to you.
The pricing decision
Why custom domains are free
Custom domains are commonly used as a reason to move people to a paid plan. We looked at the actual cost on our side and decided that was not a good enough reason to do the same.
Once the infrastructure is in place, connecting another customer-owned domain does not create a meaningful per-domain cost for MyKayd. There is still engineering behind verification, routing, HTTPS certificates, monitoring, and keeping the setup reliable, but the marginal cost of letting one more user connect a domain is small.
So our rule is simple: if a feature costs us almost nothing to provide and helps a business present itself professionally, we would rather make it broadly available than manufacture a paywall around it.
Paid MyKayd plans are meant to become more valuable as your usage and team needs grow. Your basic ability to use your own domain should not be the thing forcing you to upgrade.
Setup
How to connect your custom domain to MyKayd
You do not need to transfer your domain to MyKayd. Keep it with your current domain provider and connect a domain or subdomain by updating the DNS records MyKayd gives you.

Open Custom domains
Sign in to MyKayd, open your workspace, go to Custom domains, and choose Add custom domain.

Enter the address you want to use
A subdomain such as forms.yourcompany.com is usually the cleanest option because your main website can stay exactly where it is.

Copy the DNS records MyKayd shows you
Open your domain provider's DNS settings and add the records exactly as shown in MyKayd. These records let us verify that you control the domain and route form traffic correctly.

Return to MyKayd and check DNS
Click Check again. DNS changes can appear quickly, but depending on your provider they can also take some time to propagate.

Wait for Connected
After the DNS records are verified, MyKayd finishes the routing and HTTPS setup. When the domain shows Connected, published forms in that workspace can use the branded domain.

Domain verification
We verify that the DNS records point to the domain you added.
Traffic routing
Requests to your custom domain are routed to the correct MyKayd workspace and form.
HTTPS
MyKayd provisions the secure HTTPS connection after verification.
Safe transition
Your normal MyKayd link remains available while the custom domain is being prepared.
A few setup tips
- Use a subdomain such as forms.yourcompany.com unless you intentionally want the root domain to point to your forms.
- Copy the DNS values exactly. A small typo is enough to prevent verification.
- Do not delete unrelated DNS records for your website or email.
- If MyKayd cannot see the records immediately, give DNS time to update and try Check again.
What we want MyKayd pricing to represent
We are still building MyKayd and learning where customers get the most value. But one principle is becoming important to us: a paid plan should unlock meaningful additional capacity or capability, not take ownership away from the user.
That is also why we want the Free plan to be useful for real work. Custom domains, Notion and Linear integrations, webhooks, and response exports are all examples of features we would rather let people use than artificially lock away.
The business model should work because MyKayd becomes more useful as your forms, AI usage, storage, analytics, workspaces, and team grow — not because we charge you to put your own name on your own link.
